Last summer, the Lay's brand announced the launch of the "Do Us A Flavor" contest in the U.S. The contest, which invited fans to submit their potato chip flavor ideas, resulted in 3.8 million flavor submissions! After several months of judging, three finalists were selected to have their flavors developed and sold in stores nationwide to compete for the grand prize of $1 million or one percent of their flavor’s 2013 net sales, whichever is greater.
I'm excited to say we announced the three finalists this morning, and they joined actress and restaurateur Eva Longoria, celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Symon and executives from Frito-Lay and PepsiCo to ring The Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange. From there, the three finalists, Longoria and Symon headed outside to share free samples of the new flavors with the public and encourage fans to vote for their favorite. The flavors and the finalists who submitted them are:
- Lay's Chicken & Waffles was submitted by Christina Abu-Judom, a volunteer coordinator at a Phoenix, Ariz. non-profit. Her nephew encouraged her to submit the flavor and was also the inspiration. He'll still never let her live down the time she stole a bite of waffle from his plate.
- Lay's Cheesy Garlic Bread was submitted by Karen Weber-Mendham, a part-time children's librarian and mom of three in Land O'Lakes, Wis. Her flavor inspiration was going out for pizza with her family. While waiting for the pizza to come to the table, Karen always orders a bowl of cheesy garlic bread for the family to enjoy.
- Lay's Sriracha was submitted by Tyler Raineri, a student at Illinois State University. His flavor inspiration was his love of the spicy condiment that began with his grandmother, whose homemade chips were always seasoned with a dab of the red-hot sauce.
Take a look at pictures from today's events below. Afterwards, head to your local store to pick-up and taste the finalist flavors for yourself -- then cast your vote to support your favorite through the official "Do Us A Flavor" app on the Lay's Facebook page!
