"Everything old is new again" is one of those things I've always heard people say, but it's only over the past six months or so that I've really come to believe it. At the end of last year, Frito-Lay brought back Doritos Taco with its original seasoning blend and packaged in a retro bag, for a limited time only. However, we received such an overwhelmingly positive response -- both through Snack Chat and our Consumer Relations team -- that Frito-Lay decided to keep Doritos Taco on store shelves for good.
Now, we're taking the next step... backward. Frito-Lay recently rolled out special throwback packaging for several of our most popular snacks, including Ruffles, Cheetos Crunchy and Cheetos Puffs. The new packaging is now available in stores nationwide, and makes a great way to share the fun this summer by bringing back memories of these classic snacks.
These Frito-Lay snacks aren't the only retro items that people are talking about these days. Companies are highlighting how retro design and retro product recipes have become incredibly popular in the packaging industry, and consumers are saying how much they love retro branding -- and how "yummy" Doritos Taco tastes!
Plus, let's not forget about Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback, made with real sugar. These drinks were also brought back for a limited time, but are now here for the long term after consumers let us know how much they loved them! To celebrate their permanent return, you can check out the Pepsi Throwback Facebook page (complete with old-school Atari Arcade), the Mountain Dew Throwback Shack (home of "Willy," the 1960s animated Moutain Dew pitchman) and a new line of retro T-shirts featuring the memorable Diet Pepsi and Ray Charles’ "You Got the Right One Baby, Uh-Huh!” ads.
What do you think will be the next big retro craze?
