Frito-Lay’s alternative vehicle efforts got some presidential attention Friday, as President Barack Obama announced the National Clean Fleets Partnership, a public-private initiative in which our parent company, PepsiCo, and other major companies made a commitment to reduce their vehicles’ diesel and gas use.
Under the partnership, PepsiCo, UPS, AT&T, FedEx and Verizon will roll out more than 20,000 vehicles designed to cut fuel consumption. "As owners of some of our nation's largest private fleets, these companies are leading the way when it comes to building clean fleets, and we need to make sure all our businesses are following their example," Obama told an audience at a UPS facility in Maryland. (Tune into his full remarks about the partnership on the White House’s YouTube channel.)
Frito-Lay’s CEO, Al Carey, and CEOs from the partnership’s other charter companies joined the president at the event. Al, along with our fleet sustainability manager, Steve Hanson, and our fleet operations director, Mike O'Connell, shown here, gave Obama (who jokingly asked them, “You got some corn chips?") an up-close look at one of our all-electric delivery trucks. Steve explained that in addition to saving fuel, the truck has been a hit among our drivers: “They like the quiet. They like the visibility. And they like not smelling like diesel fumes."
