UPDATE (2/28/11): Hi, Snack Chat friends! I'm happy to provide an update on Cathy's blog post below. We heard your great feedback and love your passion for Doritos Taco. So, some good news -- we'll be keeping Doritos Taco on store shelves! Remember to use our online product locator to find stores near you that sell it (http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/where-to-buy.html). Happy snacking! - Kristin
Hello again, Snack Chat readers. It’s Cathy Dial from the Consumer Relations team here at Frito-Lay. Every day, our team is talking to and exchanging emails with hundreds of Frito-Lay fans who have questions and comments about our products. It’s through this feedback that we get a better idea of what’s on the minds of our fans.
Today, I’m happy to share our Doritos team has done just that - listened to the feedback from some of our very loyal fans - and is bringing back a flavor from the past. Doritos’ oldest, most popular, most requested flavor is finally back. Drum roll, please! It’s Doritos Taco – back for a limited time with its original seasoning blend and packaged in a retro bag, which clearly identifies this iconic brand.
We’re excited to re-introduce what we’re calling one of our ‘throwback’ flavors with Doritos Taco. ‘Throwback’ is a nod to flavors from the past that evoke fond memories for our fans.
Doritos debuted in 1966 and immediately achieved a loyal following. A year later, we introduced Doritos Taco, and fans have relished the intense flavors associated with the brand ever since.
We retired Doritos Taco when many of the brand’s fans opted for bigger, bolder and more savory flavors. However, many of you called, emailed, and even posted blog entries and comments begging for its return!
So, at long last, Doritos Taco is finally back. Grab a bag or two and savor the flavor while you can - it will be available through Super Bowl. I happen to think it’s a perfect complement to game watching. Ole!
- Cathy
Thank you so much! This is truly fantastic, not just the flavor but the retro style packaging as well.
I will add two requests for more retro fun -- Sour Cream & Onion Doritos, and Nacho Cheese flavored Cheetos with the old Cheetos Mouse mascot on the bags! :-)

I am keeping my fingers crossed that Nacho Cheese Cheetos will be one of the next throwback flavors. Then I can stopping bugging everyone every couple of months. :)

Wow, thank you so much for bringing back this classic. I bought a bag yesterday morning and as of tonight it is officially empty... The old style bag caught my attention while walking down the chip isle.
Thanks again!
I hope to see more retros in the future! Perhaps Sour Cream & Onion Doritos?:)

This is amazing news!! So happy, and I can only hope that only the package is limited and the flavor remains. There's plenty of room for more flavors and Taco deserves a permanent spot in the line up!

Please keep the throwback flavor of Taco Doritos. It's the only time I ever buy Taco flavor because the other taco "flavors" are just... icky. I don't like them. I've never liked them. Too sweet. Throwback Taco Doritos were perfect!
I know it's for a limited time, but please consider making them a mainstay in the Doritos flavor line-up. It's certainly earned it.

I can't find them! What stores are carrying them? Are they available everywhere?
Posted by: MissTacoD | December 30, 2010 at 07:59 AM
MissTacoD -- Thanks for your question! Doritos Original Taco will be available nationally, although not in all stores. You can check the "Where to Buy" section of our website to see where it's available in your area: http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/where-to-buy.html

Id love to see some more retro bags - being a fan of old packaging - maybe you could do a series of different Cheetos bags from various decades - the pre-Chester bag from the 70s - the first bag with him on it from the 1980s - the bag with the 1990s logo - etc - Id love to see a retro Funyuns bag, maybe you could even bring back Delta Gold or some of the other forgotten brands of the 1980s - I can't wait to see where you go with this - keep up the good work

Ha! My mouth dropped in the chip aisle when I saw the ole TACO FLAVOR Doritos on the shelf. My family drove from Georgia to Ohio to visit friends. My girlfriend of 25 years looked at me and said "what?" I said, "look!"... we started hootin and hollarin in the store! We grabbed three bags, opened one in the car and snacked and laughed all the way back to her place. Our families thought we were crazy! We did not care and bought three more bags two days later as everyone else ate them up too! We kept telling all of them, "you just dont understand, these are the snacks we grew up with and will love forever!" No other flavor will do. It has to be TACO! I cant find them in Georgia now! How come Ohio gets them and we dont??? :) C'mon Frito Lay, bring the TACO back for good, stop teasing! The back of the bag says coming soon. When!!! How can I get some shipped to Georgia?
How about an online store?
Thanks for bringing them back, I am a loyal fan!

Thanks for bringing back the old Taco flavor. However, I do not remember the blue cheese flavor that has been added?

Thank you for the Taco. It is so amazing to have them back I actually took a pic of the bag and sent it to a childhood friend to reminisce about the good old days. Please PLEase PLEASE keep them forever.

PLEASE PLEASE do not let the ORIGINAL TACO Doritos disappear again. I alone could keep them on the shelves. As soon as I saw them on Dec 23 2010 I texted all my friends that they were BACK!! I finished the bag that night and am already on my third bag. I can't find any other chip that compares. Please keep them...it takes me back to happy times in my childhood! :)

Nice look, but I just don't like the taste of the TACO DORITOS. I wasted my money on a bag. I won't be getting any more of them.

Wow - lots of great comments about Doritos Taco! Thanks, everyone, for sharing your thoughts. The recipe is the very same as it was years ago and it's being sold all over the U.S. through Super Bowl. For stores near you that sell it, check out our online product locator: http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/where-to-buy.html Happy snacking!

Hi
I picked up two bags at a store in Central California and they are cheesy, Was this an error in bagging? I bought two big bags, all the store had, and was really disappointed.
The Tacos at Midnight are closer.

I SO wish I could find them in my area... Using the locator, the closest place to get them is (sigh) about 120 miles away (because I live in the mountains... we never get any special items :( )
Hopefully they'll still be available when i DO make it to that area (soon if I'm lucky) because Taco flavor Doritos (yes, the ORIGINALS) were the BEST CHIP out there... Is there any chance that they'll ever be picked back up as a regular item? Then I wouldn't have to wait another 30 years to get some!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I ran across a small bag of these last week. I can't remember where I got them. I forgot how good they really are. Where can I get these?
Posted by: Bill | January 09, 2011 at 06:15 PM
I bought 3 bags of these 'original' chips that I grew up with & loved...only to be disappointed that they are NOT the original recipe. Cheese-yuck taste added. I cant even finish 1 bag, very disappointed.
Can't you bring back the original recipe, please??
I know these are not, as the orignal ones had just the greatest taco flavoring. Did you lose the original recipe or what?!?!

Numerous impromptu online support groups have sprung up over the years among devoted fans who miss the original Taco Doritos flavor formula. Reincarnations and relaunches of the Taco Doritos, including the recent "Back By Popular Demand" campaign, have not recreated the original Taco flavor.
