Starting this week, Frito-Lay and the National Football League (NFL) team up to celebrate fanatical football families across America by sponsoring a contest, "Calling All Families," in which one family will win a trip to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Fla.
For a chance to win, families must tell us why they are the NFL's most fanatical football family. It's easy to enter. From now through Oct. 10, submit a 100-word essay that describes why you’re America’s biggest football fans and a photo of your family on the “Calling All Families” contest Web site. The Web site also provides the official contest rules and some helpful hints on what the judges are looking for in a winning family: Team spirit and enthusiasm, demonstration of family gatherings, identifiable party theme and, of course, natural integration of Frito-Lay products.
Eight semi-finalist families will be selected, and the NFL will create brief videos to help “tell” each of their fanatical football stories. Then, between Dec. 1 and Dec. 15, consumers will be invited to vote online (via the contest Web site) for their favorite family. The two families with the most votes will go head-to-head Dec. 16 to Jan. 3, with fans voting to determine which family will win the Grand Prize -- a trip to Miami for a five-day, VIP Super Bowl experience where they’ll meet football players, attend exclusive events and watch the game from a private stadium suite.
"Sunday football is a big social occasion -- 50 percent of all U.S. households, at some point during football season, gather with family and friends to watch the game," George Stroh, Frito-Lay's Director of Sales Planning and Execution, told me. "The ‘Calling All Families’ promotion is intended to celebrate mom's role in making these get-togethers a success, because mom is usually the family member who arranges the gatherings. We also know that 65 percent of moms watch the games with their families, and buy most of the food consumed during the games -- including their families’ favorite Frito-Lay snacks."
This is certainly true in our house. My wife, Janis, is a dedicated Dallas Cowboys football fan who plans our social events during football season and buys the Frito-Lay snacks we enjoy while watching the game. (Our favorites are Tostitos tortilla chips and dips). In fact, when I told Janis about this contest, she asked me who I thought the Dallas Cowboys would play in the Super Bowl this year!
In 2007, Janis and I attended Super Bowl XLI in Miami (thanks to Frito-Lay), and it was an experience to remember. We hung out with finalists from the first Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest, attend a rock concert (the only people older than Janis and me at the concert were the band members), and of course, watched the Indianapolis Colts defeat the Chicago Bears at Dolphin Stadium. (Janis and I pictured at right at the game).
So get that creative energy flowing and enter your family in the "Calling All Families" contest, telling us why you are the most fanatical football family in America. I guarantee that if you win, you and your family will have a blast in Miami, as Janis and I did in ’07.
