During a brainstorming session several years ago at Frio-Lay, someone suggested that we license our brand logos for dresses that would be worn at fashion shows. I thought it was a pretty wacky idea, until last month when I saw Barbie make her runway debut in New York as a part of her 50th anniversary celebration. So why not feature snacks on the runway too?
Well, it may not be the runway (yet), but Frito-Lay has moved one step closer to seeing our brand logos on more than just our snack bags, thanks to a new partnership with TerraCycle, a company that specializes in recycling packaging and other waste products into usable items.
The program with TerraCycle is called "The Frito-Lay Bag Brigade," and both our employees and snack lovers from around the United States can easily participate by signing up on the TerraCycle Web site and mailing their empty Frito-Lay packages to TerraCycle. TerraCycle will then "upcycle” the waste into cool products, such as tote bags, school supplies and gift wrap.
Participation is free (including shipping costs), and for each Frito-Lay chip bag received, we’ll donate 2 cents to the non-profit organization or school of your choice. Living greener and giving back –- two steps in the right direction for Frito-Lay – and our consumers’ future.
I’ve blogged in the past couple of months about how "Packaging Scorecards are Improving" and how we’re "Recycling to Achieve Landfill Reduction," and both topics describe the specific actions that Frito-Lay -– and other companies -- are taking to reduce packaging sent to landfills. The TerraCycle program is another way we’re making progress on our sustainability journey.
Word is starting to spread about our partnership with TerraCycle and what it means to our planet. Check out the Dallas Morning News’ Eats blog and a recent New York Times’ Green Inc. article to read more.
Who knows -- maybe one day we’ll see upcycled dresses with Frito-Lay logos debut on the runway. In the meantime, I invite you to join us as we partner with TerraCycle for the Frito-Lay Bag Brigade.
