At Frito-Lay, we celebrate Earth Day everyday. So, we wanted to share with you 10 things about our commitment to conserving and preserving our planet:
1 – Since 1993, we’ve had Green Teams at each of our manufacturing plants -- groups of employees who are focused on ensuring the highest environmental compliance and awareness at our sites and in the communities where we operate.
2 – Eight different Frito-Lay locations use solar power. The solar field at our Modesto, Calif., plant alone reduces CO2 emissions by 1.7 million pounds per year.
3 – Since 1999, we’ve reduced our electricity use by 21 percent, our natural gas use by 33 percent and our water use by 40 percent for each bag of snacks we make.
4 – We are aggressively piloting and implementing programs in our plants to reduce landfill waste, with the goal of diverting 99 percent of our waste from landfills.
5 – We save 5 million trees per year by reusing and recycling the cartons we use to transport our snacks.
6 – We recently added 1,200 fuel-efficient sprinter vehicles to our fleet -- trucks that get 50 percent more miles per gallon than previous models.
7 – We’re partnering with TerraCycle to help keep chip bags out of landfills and “upcycle” them into useful items like tote bags and school supplies. More to come on the TerraCycle partnership next week!
8– Eight of our sites have been named to the EPA’s Performance Track program for their outstanding environmental performance, and as part of PepsiCo we’ve also been named an Energy Star Sustained Excellence partner.
9 – The packaging on our large bags of SunChips are now made with 33 percent renewable materials, and we’re on-track to launch a fully compostable bag by Earth Day 2010.
10 – We’re retrofitting our Casa Grande, Ariz., plant to be a state-of-the-art facility that operates almost entirely on renewable energy sources and recycled water.
What are you doing to live green -- during Earth Week and all year-long?
These bags made with packaging film are the noisiest things ever! They're LOUD! I can't sneak a bag at night. Help.
