My wife, Janis, and I are planning our first Super Bowl party this week, and we need help to make it a success.
We decided to throw a party because, frankly, no one invited us to their party. So we invited a few friends and family who love football to join us at our house. It promises to be a great game, and I always enjoy the new commercials.
We've got the main ingredient for a great Super Bowl party -- an awesome 60-inch Sony HDTV that I bought two years ago during a midlife crisis. The challenge though is what to serve. Janis is a great cook, but she's decided to pick-up fajitas from a local Mexican restaurant, since, in her opinion, I'm of little or no help in the kitchen -- although even she will admit that I do a great job of washing dishes.
We also checked out the Tostitos Web site for dip recipes to go with the Tostitos Scoops we’ll be serving. We're making the new guacamole dip, because we love guacamole, it looks fairly easy to make and fits the Mexican food theme. Plus, one of our friends is bringing over a mouthwatering queso dip.
Finally, at the prompting of Haston Lewis, Frito-Lay Marketing Vice President for the Wal-Mart account, we went to Wal-Mart's Game Day Web site where we found great suggestions for quick and easy game day snacks, half-time party games, and even music downloads. We decided to buy the veggie tray the site recommends.
"The Wal-Mart Web site is an example of retailers making Super Bowl and other occasions more turnkey for their shoppers," Haston told me. "I enjoy collaborating with Wal-Mart to figure out how Frito-Lay can best support their programs. For Super Bowl, Tostitos Scoops and salsa are part of this year’s program, since they're the perfect no-mess party snack."
So thanks to help from Wal-Mart and Tostitos, and of course the local Mexican restaurant that’s making fajitas, we're all set for Sunday. I can't wait to watch the game and be entertained by the new commercials.
In particular, I want to find out which finalist wins the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest and see where his or her ad places in the USA TODAY Ad Meter -- if the ad places first they'll win $1 million, compliments of the Doritos team.
After the game, I'll post a blog update to fill you in on our party and the results from the Doritos ad contest -- as soon as I finish washing the dishes. What are your tips for throwing a great Super Bowl party?
